A Curated Carnival Survival List You’ll Reuse for Every Island Carnival
If this is your first St. Lucia Carnival welcome to one of the BEST carnival experiences in the Caribbean. Think nonstop fetes, road marches, boat rides, beach parties, Jouvert, and little sleep. The key to surviving (and still looking good in your photos) is packing SMART, not heavy.
This guide is curated specifically for St. Lucia Carnival, but honestly? You can use this for Trinidad, Grenada, Crop Over, Miami Carnival, and basically any carnival trip.

Carnival Budget Essentials
Carnival gets expensive FAST. Plan ahead so you can actually enjoy yourself instead of stressing over money midway through the trip.
Recommended Cash:
Bring at least $700 USD if you can bring more even better
Always carry a few $20 bills at fetes for drinks, food, taxis, or emergencies
IMPORTANT:
Caribbean vendors usually WILL NOT accept ripped or damaged bills
Keep your cash clean and flat, put it in a ziplock bag if you need to
Expected Extra Costs:
Excursions for example a boat ride around the island: approximately $150
Last-minute fete tickets
Transportation
Food after fetes (you WILL need it)
Emergency outfit/shoe purchases
Tips for drivers or hotel staff
Essentials You NEED For St. Lucia Carnival
Heat + Sun Protection
St. Lucia is HOT and humid. Protect your skin because carnival sun is different.
Pack:
Sunscreen (highest SPF possible bring multiple bottles) travel size of course. You can even get SPF body oil for a nice glow
Aloe vera gel for sunburn
Mini umbrella
Sunglasses
Lip balm with SPF
Mini fan
Cooling towel for road march days if you're participating or just watching because it gets hot
Mosquito Protection
The mosquitoes in the islands do not play around.
Bring:
Mosquito repellent (OFF brand works great) get a travel size to put in your purse
Citronella roll-on
Anti-itch cream
Bug bite patches
✈️ Travel Essentials
MUST HAVEs:
Universal travel adapter
Portable charger
Waterproof phone case
Waterproof fanny pack
Waterproof fanny pack specifically for Jouvert
Wristlets or small bags (hands-free is BEST)
Mini tripod + mini light if you create content
Passport and ID copies (physical + digital)
AirTags or luggage trackers
Reusable water bottle
Feminine wipes (some bathrooms WILL run out of toilet paper)
Recovery Kit (Trust Me)
You will be partying for DAYS straight.
Pack:
Dramamine motion sickness tablets (especially for the long rides)
Advil travel packs
Liquid IV or electrolyte packets
Vitamin C packets
Band-aids/blister pads
Digestive medicine
Antacids for mild heart burn
👟 Shoes Matter More Than Your Outfit
Carnival veterans know this already.
Bring:
Broken-in sneakers ONLY
Insoles/sneaker soles
Waterproof slides or crocs even
Backup comfortable shoes
Compression socks for flights
DO NOT bring:
Brand new shoes
Anything uncomfortable
Heels for long fetes unless you enjoy suffering. If you must wear a heel I recommend small inch heels that are block style
Makeup + Beauty Tips
Honestly? Less is more.
St. Lucia Carnival heat + humidity will humble a full face QUICK.
Best Advice:
Bring mostly travel-size makeup
Waterproof EVERYTHING
Setting spray is mandatory
Lash glue that can survive sweat
Minimal makeup for daytime fetes
Edge control that can withstand the heat if you need
Portable mirror
Extra hair ties
Your favorite lipstick or lipgloss
Mini Perfume, I always just buy a bunch of perfume samples and put them in my purse
You may not even WANT makeup after the second fete. I'm a makeup no makeup girly and try to keep things light with concealer, liquid blush and highlight and powders to keep everything in tack. That's it!
Carnival Outfit Extras
These are the things people forget and regret later:
Don’t Forget:
Nipple covers/fashion tape
Glue Gun in case you need to reattach some gems on your costume
Safety pins
Mini sewing kit
Extra stockings/fishnets
Body glitter
Baby powder
Deodorant wipes
Extra chargers
Ziploc bags for wet clothes
Laundry bag
Portable stain remover wipes
Chaffing Balm because thick thighs save lives
Jouvert Survival Tips
Jouvert gets MESSY.
Wear:
Dark clothes or monokini
Cheap sneakers or boots
Waterproof pouch or fanny pack
Minimal valuables
Bring:
Goggles or sunglasses
Baby oil or vaseline put this on your body before when getting ready (helps remove paint/mud afterward)
